The first fuel cell was built in the 1840s. Fuel cells were on the Gemini series of rockets starting in 1962. The first hydrogen fuel cell forklift was put into operation in 1965.

This is not remotely a new technology. Unlikely batteries, there's not much more efficiency, effectiveness or reliability that can be wrung from it.
