Sure, if Japan wants to bankrupt itself because of stuff that it very stupidly did 70 years ago, it's fine for it to do so as a country.

Its GHG emissions will plummet with its economy, so it's a climate win either way.

But if it actually wants to be a functioning part of a decarbonized global economy and be able to maintain its industrial base in a competitive manner, HVDC interconnects in multiple directions is what is required.

Strategic energy interdependence with hedging means transmission interconnections to Russia, China, South Korea and the Philippines.
