Of course, as the Manifesto Project which studies global democracies through the lens of political platforms in every election for 50 countries stretching back to 1945 makes clear, the Democratic Party is centrist. The GOP is out in the ugly seats with far-right parties. The Democratic Party had followed them over, with Bill Clinton's out-toughing them on crime, and Barack Obama's remarkably far right campaign in 2008, but they've swung back to centrist and sensible since. So if you are looking for a middle ground, it's straddled by the six wings of the Democratic Party. There's certainly room for the Republicans to return to sanity of course, but the sensible ones abandoned the party and vote Democratic now.
