Not sure why you think natural sciences are fairly right wing. The last polling I was able to dig up is a bit stale at 2009 from Pew, but it clearly shows majority scientific support for Democrats across the board. That said, I agree that Clinton campaigned center-right and that the Democrats are straddling the center, while the Republicans have shifted substantially away from the center in a couple of unpleasant directions.
