Given that the Proterra's had a range of 30 miles and you can get a BYD K Series with 6x that range for about $400,000, I think Foothill transit took a whole lot of money from a couple of levels of government that was earmarked solely for hydrogen.
They'll regret it. Among other things, hydrogen buses have 50% higher maintenance costs than diesel and 100% higher than battery electric buses, and hydrogen refueling stations have 30% of capital cost per annum maintenance costs.
The odds that the buses will be out of service regularly, negating any claimed advantages, is very high.
