Get STEM competent advisors who don't have conflicts of interest. Give them clear marching orders to assess things on first principles and tell the truth. Listen to them.

If politics is pushing toward something that's clearly a non-starter, try to find a way to derail it or to get distance from it. Let others eat the loss.
