AOC is saying quite accurately that Miami is seriously at risk due to climate change. She is further saying that serious issues require substantive actions. Her assertion is that the Green New Deal is substantive set of actions, and she’s correct. I’ve assessed the GND in depth and know that its components and approaches are strongly aligned with climate reality, with US historical antecedents and are reasonable. It’s a good set of targets given the circumstances and the US context. The GND would strongly improve US climate actions, help it’s society shift into the low-carbon future we require, address climate resilience, and not leave members of society behind as society transforms rapidly around them.
That she is too optimistic about the ability to save Miami is indicative that she’s unaware of how serious the compounded issues in southern Florida are, but that’s understandable. Most people don’t know this, even the ones who aren’t in denial about climate change in general.
