That said, Alberta's electricity market liberalization came with a predictable and likely sought for downside: very expensive transmission. As in Australia, liberalization turned into a regulatory model that guaranteed profits to utilities for a bunch of expenditures. As a result, transmission in the province has been gold-plated with a bunch of well connected people doing handsomely at the expense of citizens and industry.

That's one of the reasons why Alberta's electricity, despite having been filthy with coal and natural gas, is much higher than almost any province in Canada's.
